Wonky Rails Quilt - So Quick and Easy!

I’m beyond excited to share this quilt with you! This is quite possibly my favorite quilt to make. It manages to be interesting while also being quick and forgiving. Is it just me, or is that just about the ultimate quilty trifecta? Especially if you’re in a hurry.

Who did I make it for?

This is Sinclair’s baby quilt. She’s my friend’s 4th daughter. I somehow missed the announcement that she was on the way, so I didn’t realize I needed to make a quilt until after she was born! That meant I had to come up with an idea that I could whip up quickly.

I finished the quilt top in no time flat. But I have to admit that I let it languish far too long before quilting and photographing it. I’m a bit behind (maybe more than a bit). My friend has already had his 5th daughter now! The quilt for that little one is in the works as we speak. If you’re curious, you can also check out the quilts that I made for daughters one, two, and three.

Is this the fastest quilt ever?

It wasn’t exactly a scientific study, but several of my testers agreed that this was the fastest and most relaxing quilt they had ever made. And they all thought it was quicker and more rewarding than a jelly roll race, which is widely regarded as one of the fastest quilts there is. I’ve certainly made plenty of them.

Speaking of pattern testers…

Have you ever wanted to test a quilt pattern? It’s a super-important behind-the-scenes job that’s great for detail-oriented quilters of all skill levels. Testers help me catch mistakes and find the clearest way to present information so the patterns you buy are the best they can be.

What testers do - Read the whole pattern and follow the instructions as written to make a quilt. Catch mistakes and give feedback on anything that could be clearer. Take some high-quality pictures in good lighting that I have permission to use. Meet the deadline. Wait to share pictures until the pattern is released.

What they get in return - A peak behind the curtains before patterns are revealed. A free copy of the final version of the pattern. A boost on social media. My undying gratitude.

If pattern testing is something you’d be interested in, let me know! We can chat and figure out if we’re a good fit for each other.

Quilting and Finishing

I was really in the mood for circles when I quilted this one, so I used Bubbles by Anne Bright. I backed it with purple Shannon Cuddle. The minky fabric and open quilting design makes it so soft and snuggly!

It took me a bit to decide on binding. I auditioned several fabrics and decided that I wanted to accent the blue in the quilt. I really like how the binding makes the rest of the blue pop.

Another Version

I made this quilt once before when my local quilt guild was supporting Be a Santa to a Senior. That time I decided to do something more masculine, and I absolutely adore how this Wonky Rails quilt came out. I love the combination of blue, green, and brown.

Psst… This quilt is perfect for a last minute holiday gift!

Are you starting to feel the holiday crunch? If you have multiple gifts to make, or if you prefer to send your quilts to a longarmer, it’s already getting late.

Since this quilt goes together so easily, it’s the perfect choice for those last minute gifts.

What if wonky is scary?

You’re in good company! Lots of quilters hesitate when angles aren’t precise. A couple of my testers were right there with you! But…

This quilt is quite possibly the best introduction to wonky you could have.

My testers agreed that this pattern made wonky easy. While they started out feeling a bit nervous, they quickly hit their stride. One of them even told me it’s her new favorite pattern!

Why did they like it so much? Because it’s so forgiving! There’s plenty of room to trim the blocks, so you don’t have to worry about mistakes. And the pattern tells you exactly how to get it right - no wondering if you’re cutting things too big or too small. The pattern even includes a diagram with multiple ideas for cutting the angles. I hope you’ll give it a try!

Outtakes

Getting pictures outdoors is always a fun adventure. We tried several things to make one work with this fence, but ultimately the wind just wouldn’t let us! We did get plenty of laughs while the wind plastered the quilt to me, though.

Can I ask you a question?

Do you have a favorite occasion that you like to make quilts for? Holidays, graduation, babies, etc.?

I love making baby quilts. There’s just something special about celebrating a new life with a quilt. And it’s even better if the parents share a picture with the quilt in use!
