Focused on Finishing

Welcome to my stop on the UFOvember blog hop! I’m Bobbi - software tester by day, quilter by night. In addition to blogging here, I also like to hang out on Instagram as @SnowyDaysQuilting.

This week, the focus of UFOvember is Resume. It’s an opportunity to take a project you love, dust it off, and work towards a finish. After giving it some thought, I decided to tackle two baby quilts that are long overdue. I quilted them before the babies were born, but then I stalled out. (Confession - I love minky, but I hate trimming quilts that include it. It makes such a mess!)

The first quilt I wanted to finish is for a little girl. The fabric is Winterscape by Island Batik, and the quilting design is Carmel by the Sea by Christy Dillon. The pattern for this one is currently in progress and I’m planning to release it early next year. Let me know if you’d like to be notified when it’s available!

The second quilt is for a little boy. I made this one entirely from scraps (even the background was left over from another project!). I quilted it with Argyle Play by Anne Bright. The pattern is Bright Diamonds by Zen Chic.

Once I had the quilts trimmed, it was time to turn my attention to binding. The more I thought about it, the less it seemed like any one color would work for binding this quilt. There’s just so much negative space around the edges, and I wanted something that would pull all of the colors to the outside. So I raided my binding bin for scraps. It felt good to use up some leftovers!

The other quilt needed a dark binding to give it a solid place to stop. I found this super dark purple in my stash that was absolutely perfect. Since these quilts have minky backs, I sewed the binding to both sides by machine. While I’m not very quick at that, it still made for some fast finishes!

Once both quilts were finished, my wonderful hubby went out in the snow with me to take some pictures. I just love the little bit of snow on all of the branches of this pine tree. We’ve already had a couple of good snowstorms this year, and I can’t wait for more. It will be cross country skiing season soon!

And here’s the other one. Don’t you just love that scrappy binding?

Once I finished the baby quilts, I was on a roll. I decided to pull out a quilt repair project that I’ve been putting off for much too long. This quilt has had some unfortunate encounters with a puppy, and the binding didn’t make it out unscathed. In addition to several chewed sections like this, there was a good bit of general wear since this is an older quilt that has been well-loved. So I bit the bullet and decided to replace the entire binding.

I was surprised at how long it took to rip off the old binding! I made it through a few episodes of Doctor Who and a couple episodes of The Queen’s Gambit while I was ripping. I’ve since sewn the new binding to the front of the quilt, and I just started pulling it around to the back. I’m taking my time with this one and finishing it by hand, so it will be a while before it’s ready to return home to my sister.
