Scattered Petals Quilt Block
It’s time for another month of Quilt Block Mania! Once again, we have a whole bunch of designers sharing complementary patterns for 12” finished quilt blocks. The patterns are guaranteed to be free all month long! (Free through March 31, 2021)
This month’s theme is Flowers. As I started thinking about the theme, my mind drifted to flower petals scattered about. Then I started to wonder if I could come up with a modern version of that. I really like what I ended up with. The dark triangles are flower petals scattered across a checkered background. Of course, you could modify the idea and use all one background fabric, or perhaps a variety of colors for the petals.
Intermission for Spring Pattern Sale
Before we get too far on this, did you happen to catch yesterday’s post? I shared a super easy table topper to add some springtime cheer. All it takes is one charm pack and a little bit of background fabric. The pattern is on sale for just $5 this week only. That’s 38% off! The sale ends at 6:00 pm Eastern Time on Friday, March 5, 2021.
Back to the Block - 60 Degree Triangle Ruler
To make this block, you’ll need a 60 degree triangle ruler that has a blunt tip. My very favorite is the Creative Grids 60 Degree Triangle 8-1/2in Quilt Ruler (CGRT60). I love that it slides easily until you apply a little pressure, and then it stays firmly in place. The thin markings also make it very easy to line up the ruler with your fabric.
Trimming the Block
When you finish sewing, your block will look like this. So we need to trim it to end up with a square.
I found it easiest to trim this block with a 12 1/2” square ruler. I really like this one from Creative Grids. I centered the ruler horizontally, and lined up the top and bottom with the edges of the block.
From there, it was just a couple quick cuts to end up with a perfectly square block.
More Ideas
This block lends itself well to variations. You could keep the checkered background, or make the petals look like they’re floating by using all one background fabric.
You could also make the color variation in the background much more subtle. Or perhaps switch the placement of the lights and darks.
Are you feeling inspired? If you’ve never made a triangle quilt, I hope you’ll give this a try! A block is a great way to learn a new technique without the commitment of a whole quilt.
If you’d like to save this idea for later, this image is ready to go for Pinterest.

We have many more fabulous blocks from other designers. I hope you’ll check them out!
